In
addition to her work as a visual artist, Onça is also the
director and founder of the Tribal Fusion dance ensemble, Baraka
Mundi. Based in Western North Carolina, the troupe combines
live music, dance, myth, and storytelling to educate, entertain,
and enchant.
In 2005, Onça
realized a long-term artistic vision of hers, when she produced,
directed, co-wrote, and performed in Secret of Ashes: the Phoenix
Reborn. Performed by the dancers and musicians of Baraka Mundi and
friends, Secret of Ashes was an all-original world fusion ballet,
and a true community effort. The
production was filmed live at the Asheville Community Theater on
April 2, 2005.
The story is based
on a Ukranian folktale, though the production has its roots in many
different cultures. Experience a classic story of Good and Evil:
the Firebird, symbol of hope & rebirth, and Baba Yaga, the wicked
witch of the woods. A naive young woman is transformed when these
polarizing forces collide in her life.

The production
brings together Incredible costumes, a live score, and innovative
dance theater. In addition, it brought together many very talented
artists from the Asheville arts community, including costume design
by Myah Hubbell, cover design
by Ilsa Ananda (co-founder of
I AM), and audio production by Logos.
The dancers are
accompanied by the Baraka Mundi band, which composed all the music
and performed it live. To listen to short audio samples from the
