About the Artist
| Lauren Onça O'Leary has always been artistically inclined. But although she grew up in a community where art was a part of the working class, college convinced her that she couldn't make a living at it, and that it was foolish to try. Later, a crisis brought her to the realization that she couldn't live without art in her life, and that work without art is dehumanizing. |

Onça's current artistic passion is the performing arts (dance and theater), and she is currently producing, directing, and performing in a full length theatrical dance show called "Secret of Ashes: The Phoenix Reborn". Onça describes the show as a classic tale of good and evil, a world fusion fairy tale with bellydance, fantasy, martial arts, and live music. "Part of the challenge for any artist is figuring out how to move from being insular with your art to bringing it to other people without selling your soul." Secret of Ashes (which will ultimately be a touring show, DVD, and music CD) is easily digestible and will allow her to bring her art to a wider audience, as well as elevating the art of bellydance to the level of other dance forms. In the future, Onça looks forward to developing "Multi-Cultural Multi-Media." She plans to explore some racier themes with bellydance fairy burlesque. As always, she constantly strives to explore spiritual themes in her work; a self-reflective journey of the self; a message in the beauty.
