"One Still Moment" is a meditation in melodic/percussive
instruments. It strives to convey a sense of stillness and
serenity in the midst of the busy world. Recent work explores
the possibility of smoothly separating rhythm from melody
within an individual voice.
|
"Deep
Dish" layers a pointillistic rendering of singing
voices over a deep and grounding bass, surrounded by quick
skittering textures and organ voicings, reaching insistently
toward sustained presence, as consciousness stretches and
flexes its wings.
|
"If
I Can" takes my recent fascination with the kalimba
in another direction still: allowing the instrument (in radically
modified form) to provide a fluttering texture rather than
a rhythmic foundation for the work. The piece speaks of quiet
confidence in the face of challenge.
|
"I
Am a Broken Bank Vault" enlists the kalimba to drift
around and within the rhythmic space established by the other
instruments. Sustained tension between repetition and variation
draws the listener toward an engaged but entranced state of
full awareness. As the piece draws to a close, the imagined
space can no longer exist on this plane and the kalimba becomes
the dialogue of a community of jeweled machine-insects.

"Living
Sound (A)" is centered on melodic and timbral material
generated by an artificial-life environment of my own design.
Composers of the future, to paraphrase Brian Eno, will not
only write music, but will write systems that write music. |
